Everybody can do Math!

Do you still remember the days when you were solving math problems?  The amount of effort that you’ve spent on finding “X”? All the countless times that you’ve asked a classmate for help? And finally those times that you were stuck and decided to look at the answer model? Well, say goodbye to those times and say hello to a mathless future, provided by the new PhotoMath app.

But how does this app, developed by Microblink, exactly work? PhotoMath describes their app as follows: “PhotoMath reads and solves mathematical expressions by using the camera of your mobile device in real time. It makes math easy and simple by educating users how to solve math problems.”

By pointing the camera of your mobile phone at a math problem, the app will instantly solve the problem and provide the answer. But does that help people with getting better at math? No, that’s why it also provides a step-by-step walkthrough about how to solve the problem. This app can serve as an immensely helpful teaching tool for: arithmetic expressions, fractions and decimals, powers and roots and also simple linear equations. The app developers, Microblink, are also saying that more functions will be added to the app.

This app will allow millions of students to solve their math homework within hours. It will also allow them to actually learn something from the app, as it solves the problem step-by-step. But is this a good development? Will this app be the start of a mathless future? A future where high school students don’t have to worry about making their math homework? A future where everyone is good in math? The answer to these questions is still unknown, since the app is scheduled to launch in the first quarter of 2015.

I think this new development is very interesting! I have also seen the video of the presentation of this new application on the site of TechCrunch. However I do not think that the application is the start of a future without mathematics. At high school we always had our own answers book. So also then we were able to simply overwrite these given solutions. Only problem is that you will receive a low grade afterwards on the exam. I actually think that this application will contribute to the math quality of students. With PhotoMath students are more able to perceive mathematic as fun to do, which will lead to more affinity with math and hopefully also higher grades. In my opinion the application of PhotoMath will be creating even more value when the app will connect the math questions with training videos, which will provide an explanation of the theory behind the structure of this specific question. However, the ability of showing the needed steps to get to the solution is already very helpful.
