The Lifespan of Storage Media

These days, Cloud Computing is the way to storage your data. Since we, as BIM-students, are very familiar with this new technology, we would almost forgot how media was storaged in the past. ‘Crashplan’ had just made an analysis of all kinds of data storage materials over the past years. The research also included the time how long your media will last on each different type of media.
In their research they used a infographic to clarify their findings. Because of this interesting subject, I’d like to share this infographic with you.

Social Good Summit

We all have heard about ‘Project-X’ in Haren. Besides the fact that it is shocking what people are capable of in such situation.. We as Bimmers should be enthousiastic seeing the great impact of social media in a short amount of time.

Fortunately, I found something on the internet which use the great impact of social media and technology in a much better way:

The Social Good Summit is a three-day conference where big ideas meet new media to create innovative solutions. During three days in september, a lot of speakers from all over the world will speak with each other to create new ideas. The speakers are all kind of speakers: technologist, influental minds, creative activist; they will all come together for just one goal: to unlock the potential of new media and technology to make the world a better place, and then to translate that potential into action.

Besides that, they want to create the biggest online global conversation. Everyone who is interested can participate and join the conversation. People from all over the world can watch the lifestream and interact in real time by using the hashtag #SGSglobal. Since everyone is using social media, it is good that  we now are using it in a way that can help other people.

What I also like about this idea, is the fact that we can hear stories from countries we never hear something about. Someone from across the world, for example Kanya,  can share their problems with the rest of the world where we don’t even realize that those problems exist. After those three days, discussions will start about the problems and hopefully also the solutions. After one year they will bring all those discussions together in a ‘world wide paper’ which will be online. In that way, we can all face the opportunities and challenges we will have to deal with.

So what do you think? Is this a great way to use technology? And will it be useful?

Bill Moggridge 1943-2012

On September 8 , Bill Moggridge, a British industrial designer who designed an early portable computer with the flip-open shape what we now call a lap-top , has died. A moment were we should realize how important his breakthrough  was. Although his design wasn’t even that close to what we now call a ‘lap-top’, it was the start of a new kind of technical period of time. His creation was maybe the beginning of what we now call a smartphone. The so called ‘Gridd Compass’ made it possible to shift your computer towards different places. They even used it in space!

So, back to the start.. Where would we be in the technical field if Bill Moggridge didn’t invent his kind of lap top? Maybe, the fast and thin computers which we are used to these days, still would not exist. And what about smartphones and tablets? If  you keep that in mind, it makes you realize how important this man was. It also makes clear how much impact one person can have in this growing industry.

Besides the invention of the lap-top, Bill Moggridge was also co-founder of IDEO, one of the most respected design firms in Silicon Valley. We all know designs of IDEO, since they make their products for Apple, Palm and Microsoft.  Therefore, we can say that almost every technical device you  see, is made by the influence and knowledge of Bill Moggridge.
